Unlock the Power of Expert Advice!
Banff in winter is nothing short of magical, offering the perfect blend of adventure, luxury, and stunning natural beauty. While this destination is popular year-round, I’ve found it hard to choose a favorite season after experiencing both summer and winter here. From the rush of dog sledding to the luxury of staying at Fairmont Banff Springs, to the breathtaking views from the Banff Gondola and the thrill of skiing, every moment in this winter wonderland becomes a cherished memory.
Let’s explore the best things to do in Banff during winter, where snowy landscapes and exciting activities come together with cozy, relaxing experiences.
Experience the Thrill of Dog Sledding
One of the most exhilarating ways to explore the winter landscape in Banff is through dog sledding. I had the incredible opportunity to try this adventure with Snowy Owl Sled Dog Tours, and it exceeded all expectations. You even have the option to drive your own sled, making it a unique, hands-on experience, or simply enjoy the ride while being pulled by a team of eager huskies. I chose a shorter tour, which was advertised as two hours but lasted closer to four hours, including bus transfers. My toddler wasn’t quite old enough to handle the sled, but he loved the experience, all bundled up in a sheepskin on the sled while my husband commanded the team. The snow-dusted landscape felt like something straight out of a winter fairytale.Indulge in Luxury at Fairmont Banff Springs
For a truly luxurious winter experience, stay at the iconic Fairmont Banff Springs, located in the heart of Banff National Park. This majestic, castle-like hotel offers a perfect blend of opulence and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. After a day of outdoor adventures, relax by the fireplace or take a dip in the heated outdoor pool surrounded by snow-covered peaks. For an even more exclusive experience, consider staying in Fairmont Gold accommodations. This elevated service includes private check-in, concierge services, and access to a cozy lounge. The rooms are stunning, and the personalized service makes your stay even more special. During the holidays, the hotel is decked out in festive decorations, making it the perfect place for a winter getaway.Soar Above the Snow on the Banff Gondola
One of the top winter activities in Banff is taking the Banff Gondola to the top of Sulphur Mountain. The ride offers stunning views of the snow-covered valley below, and once you reach the summit, the panoramic vistas are even more spectacular. At the top, treat yourself to a meal at Sky Bistro, where the food is just as impressive as the scenery. Make sure to reserve your tickets ahead of time, particularly during busy periods!Hit the Slopes at Banff’s Ski Resorts
Banff is a skier’s paradise, and if you love winter sports, hitting the slopes is a must. Whether you’re an expert skier or a beginner, Banff’s resorts cater to all skill levels. You can enjoy skiing at Mt. A ski resort like Norquay, Sunshine Village, or Lake Louise is a good choice. Though we skipped skiing during our visit, there was still plenty to do, making Banff perfect for both adrenaline seekers and those looking for a more leisurely winter experience.Embark on a Johnston Canyon Ice Walk
For a truly unique winter adventure, try the Johnston Canyon Ice Walk. This guided tour takes you through a frozen canyon, where towering walls are adorned with shimmering ice formations. The frozen waterfalls are an incredible sight, and you may even spot ice climbers braving the chilly conditions. This walk is a great way to immerse yourself in Banff’s winter landscape.Take a Day Trip to Lake Louise
A visit to Banff wouldn’t be complete without a trip to Lake Louise. In winter, the lake freezes over, creating a picturesque setting for ice skating or a romantic horse drawn sleigh ride. For an extra special experience, book afternoon tea or a fondue dinner at the Fairmont Lake Louise. This iconic hotel is a perfect place to relax and enjoy the stunning scenery. Note: In early 2025, the Fairmont Lake Louise will have a state-of-the-art thermal wellness facility, which will be eco-friendly.Explore Banff Town
No winter visit to Banff is complete without exploring the charming town itself. The streets are lined with cozy shops, cafes, and art galleries, all beautifully decorated with twinkling lights during the holiday season. Take a leisurely stroll through the town, pick up some local souvenirs, and warm up with a hot cocoa as you take in the festive atmosphere.Cozy Winter Dining
